Introduction

The Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry in Prosthodontics programmes offers intensive academic, clinical and research education that covers broad aspects in fixed and removable prosthodontics, including the planning and restoration of dental implant supported prostheses.

The programme, mapped to the GDC Speciality Curriculum in Prosthodontics, is delivered full time over three years and satisfies the requirements to sit the Membership in Prosthodontics (MPros) examinations, as well the submission of a portfolio required for inclusion in the list of The European Prosthodontic Association (EPA) recognised specialists in Prosthodontics.

If you are looking to develop and enhance your skills and knowledge in prosthodontics, this comprehensive, innovative, and student-centred programme at………will help impart the levels of competence and confidence required to appropriately diagnose manage patient seeking advanced prosthodontic care applying, concomitantly applying an evidence-based approach.

The Programme covers all aspects of contemporary prosthodontic treatment, including direct restorations, fixed (both conventionally prepared and adhesive-retained designs), removable, and implant-supported prostheses. Techniques for planning and fabricating restorations using both conventional (analogue) and digital techniques is provided. Dental implant training also includes planning, surgical placement, and restoration.

The DClinDent in prosthodontic is structured for a dentist wanting to prepare for a career as a specialist prosthodontist. At the end of study, graduates become competent and confident in complex fixed and removable prosthodontic treatment in both private or public settings as well as developing required skills for students who wish to peruse an academic career. Applications are welcome from both UK and overseas students

Course Requirements

Applicants must hold an approved dental qualification and have a minimum of one year clinical experience.

The IELTS and TOEFL standard of English Language levels listed below are applicable to all postgraduate courses. The table also lists the equivalents from other test providers.

Teaching & Learning

oDynamic learning and interactive teaching approach to enhance learning outcomes

o Training and Education Dentistry is delivered by our highly experienced Faculty of Restorative Dentistry, to include a team of, experienced specialists/ consultants, and well-known academics, educators, and researchers

o Our online platform contains has an extensive suite of content and learning resources, with access to the Ulster University Library

o Practical skills training and some clinical training primarily takes place at out state-of- the art campus in Buckingham and Reading; however, for some focussed aspects we also use local trusted provider training centres

o Teaching and training are delivered by the means of, lectures, focussed seminars, small-group teaching, journal clubs, case-based-discussions, and small group teaching in clinical and laboratory settings

oExpert Multi-Disciplinary Teaching (MDT) including both implant dentistry and dentofacial aesthetic, providing in-depth knowledge on various subjects in Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry and the related interfaces

o Research methods training is provided by our team of experienced researchers and academics

o Assessment involves a combination of written exams, oral presentations, the completion of logbooks and clinical portfolio’s, assignments, and a final year dissertation

o The structure and content of study varies across the years with most of the theoretical teaching being delivered during the first year, setting the core knowledge for the second and third year

o In a typical week, during weekdays, approximately 20% of the time is spent in lectures and tutorials, 60% in clinical-related activity (this to include practical simulated training, case-based discussion covering assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning, laboratory work delivered in a dental lab, direct supervised patient treatment in specialist- led patient’s clinics) and 20% is dedicated to administrative, research and self-directed learning

oA curriculum and work-based experience which can lead to prosthodontics speciality recognition (automatically or through exams depending on the country)
